My translation of the Abe Kobo classic, The Box man (excerpt 2)

July 26, 2011

There is no point in just making the box. This only takes one hour at the most. However, putting on the box and making the decision to become a box man requires a considerable amount of courage. It is merely a box made of cardboard; but the moment one climbs in and heads out onto the street, he becomes a monster, which is neither human nor box. A box man is rather sarcastic and venomous. Even the freak show bear man or the snake woman from the theatre billboard are quite venomous, but at least they are compensated by their admission fee. The venom of the box man, however, is not so simple.
